The Coldest Night of The Year is Almost Here

This January cold snap is a good reminder to count our blessings if we have a warm roof over our head – and help ensure those that don’t are not left without supports. If you see a vulnerable person outside, ask them if they are okay and contact the Alpha House Downtown Outreach Addictions Partnership (DOAP) Team if they require assistance or transportation to a shelter.

The cold also serves as a grave reminder that Calgary needs more affordable housing and supports for our most vulnerable people. While we have come a long way to drastically reduce chronic homelessness in our city, Calgary has nearly 2,900 people experiencing homelessness on any given night. There are many ways to help, including registering and walking in downtown Calgary’s Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) fundraiser!CNOY is a family-friendly walk on February 22 hosted by KAIROS Calgary where participants raise funds for vulnerable individuals and families in our community. Proceeds are split between HomeSpace’s affordable housing for families and Feed The Hungry programs. We encourage anyone and everyone to join – either as a sponsor, a volunteer or a walker (on a team or as an individual) and help elevate the quality of life for individuals, children and families in Calgary.

Walking as a team can be beneficial to help motivate each other throughout the course, with options of 2km, 5km, and 10 km. And since it will be a particularly cold evening, it can help to have another person there to keep you encouraged while you battle the cold together. But if you’re more inclined towards a solitary journey, then signing-up as an individual will allow you set your own pace. No matter if you join as a team or an individual, know that you are helping a lot people by taking part in this event. See you out there!
