Buffalo, NY - April
13, 2005 -
Homespace Corporation will host an opening reception for the photo
exhibit,
The Faces of
Homespace on Friday, April 15th from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM at WNED-TV
Studios' Horizon Gallery.
The collection of black-and-white photographs, which will be on
exhibit from April 15 to May 27 at WNED-TV, were taken by renown
Social Documentary Photographer Errol Daniels and capture some of
the more than 200 young families who have been helped by Homespace
Corporation.
For over ten years, Homespace Corporation has been assisting young,
single parents, ages 18 to 25, to forge better lives for themselves
and their children. Homespace provides transitional housing and a
safe, nurturing environment where single parents can learn the independent
life skills needed to break dependency on public welfare. Since opening
its doors in 1994, Homespace has helped more than 200 families, eighty-one
percent of who have returned to the community as productive citizens.
"When the public thinks about the homeless, few think of a
18-year-old mother, a two-year-old child, or an infant," commented
Thelma Roberts, Executive Director of Homespace. "Yet, the
fastest growing segment of the homeless in Erie County is young women
and their children. We hope that these photos by Mr. Daniels will
help the public understand this very special and often overlooked
portion of the homeless population."
Errol Daniels, a social
documentary photographer for more than 25 years, has published
two books of photography, including Cuba: A
Jewish Journey, documenting Jews and Jewish life from Havana to
Santiago de Cuba 2001-2003 and Nani, a documentary project on the
life of
a twelve year-old, physically-disabled Cuban girl. Daniels is committed
to using his talents as a photographer to reveal the dignity, humanity,
courage and beauty of his subjects, as they contend with the adversity
and hardships they encounter daily.
