Buffalo, NY - October 6, 2004 - Homespace Corporation, a non-profit organization that provides affordable transitional housing and support services to homeless single-parent families, today announced that it has launched a campaign to raise $12,000 in private donations by the end of the year.

Homespace, which operates twelve semi-furnished townhouses in downtown Buffalo, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Since opening its doors in 1994, Homespace has graduated more than 100 families, including more than 300 parents and children. Homespace derives its financial support from grants from private foundations and government agencies, most notably HUD and Erie County, contributions from corporate and faith-based organizations, and, increasingly, individuals. To date, Homespace has raised approximately $5,300 toward its goal.

“Homespace is a unique organization in that it not only provides a safe and secure environment to homeless single-parent families but the opportunity for those single-parents to become self-reliant,” said Thelma Roberts, Executive Director of Homespace. “Homespace provides access to counseling, education and job training, enabling single parents to develop marketable skills, and freeing them from the limitations of dependency on public assistance programs. There is no other program like Homespace in Western NY, and the needs we are addressing just continue to grow.”

The funds Homespace is seeking to raise will be used to help pay expenses associated with the operation and maintenance of its transitional housing facility of the same name located on Ellicott Street. The fund raising effort compliments parallel efforts to raise funds from government sources, corporations and foundations. In recent years, as traditional public and private funding sources have come under greater stress, Homespace has turned to rely more and more on private donations for financial support – thus the targeted goal announced today.
