Every one of us can change the desperate
plight of homeless families. There are solutions for lives that are
shaped by fear, loneliness and failure.
At Homespace, a transitional housing service for young, homeless
families, some of the children we see have never had enough to eat.
Some don't speak well, or at all. Some have never visited a doctor,
except at the emergency room. Because when a mother is young, poor
and homeless, it is tough for her to do anything. The lives of these
young women have been shaped by turmoil. Her mother may be a drug
addict; her father, absent. She may have run away from an abusive
situation at home to live with her boyfriend.
We can put tools in the hands of these young, inexperienced parents
that break this cycle of hopelessness. The tools are the basic life
skills that most of us take for granted, such as how to manage money,
cook and clean, get a job, finish school and take loving care of
our children.
Community caring and support helped to create Homespace, the YWCA
and other agencies that change the lives of homeless families. Our
continued success depends upon you.
Financial contributions help families purchase basic household necessities.
Donations of usable items help stretch limited family budgets. The
gift of your time can end isolation with friendship and good advice.
Your tutoring can help a young mother prepare for her GED exam.
Your generosity and commitment can bring you the same joy I get
-- watching the blank stare of a toddler become a grin and hearing
a once-silent child's voice fill a room with giggles. Together, we
can change the lives of two generations -- one family at a time.
