Homespace currently operates a facility
in the City of Buffalo that consists of twelve individual
townhouses, administrative
and support
staff
offices, laundry facilities, and a child's activity center.
Since opening its doors in 1994, Homespace has assisted hundreds of parents and children.
Homespace
Corporation is managed by Executive
Director Kim Morris,
who balances her compassion for the residents with her administrative
duties and responsibilities to Homespace Corporation, which includes the newly opened Second Chance Home. In addition
to Ms. Morris, the staff of Homespace consists of 14 full-time
and part-time employees who provide case management, life
skills education, parenting skills, empowerment education, and assistance
with transition to permanent housing.
Funding for the operation of Homespace Corporation's main
facility is provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD), and must be matched through fundraising efforts
of the Executive Director
and
Board of
Directors. Accordingly, the organization sponsors a number
of fundraising
events throughout the year, has established a number of financial
partners, applies for grants from public and private institutions, and accepts individual
donations.

Recognizing
that the Buffalo-Niagara region has the second highest rate of teen
pregnancy in New York State,
and that there is an unmet need for transitional housing for teen
parents, Homespace Corporation prepared plans for, and arranged
the financial support for the construction of a foster group
residence for young mothers and their children. The facility (an
artist rendering
is pictured here) is called Second
Chance
Home, and opened in
September 2005.
Second Chance Home, which has been operating for well over one year now, provides housing
and services to up to eight single-parents, ages 14 - 17, and their
children and will provide much of the same support and opportunities
that Homespace provides to adult-age parents and their children.
